Introduction

The Not Yo Booo Bucket hat was a spur-of-the-moment design. I designed this sassy bucket hat in late 2024, when I was trying to get into the groove of Halloween and fall-themed designs for the crochet community. It's sort of a take on a duck face, which I thought was different for faces on bucket hats at the time. The eyes can be turned up or down to give either a sassy look or more of a cheerful vibe.

This bucket hat was designed with the idea of a ghost floating around in the air, like in the Super Mario Bros. games. The first version I made was originally white, but you can substitute any of the colors for your preferred Halloween colorway! If you want, you can even make this into a Valentine's theme or St. Patrick's Day.

This is the very first hat I made with this pattern, and I didn't pick it up again until now, in mid-September 2026. It's not the Halloween season again, and I'm committed to contributing to the crochet community with some fun, unique free patterns!

Need a Different Size?

I love how versatile this pattern is, and it can be easily customized to different sizes for all age ranges. To do this, just increase or decrease the number of rounds in the crown and body of the hat. For example, this pattern is written for an average adult-sized head (it fits my head snugly: 25"), so if you need a kid-sized hat, decrease the number of rounds in the crown and body of the hat to fit the individual's measurements.

Try referring to the sizing charts below to adhere to the measurements you need.

Before You Get Started

The pattern is written in US terminology and is considered beginner-friendly. Please note that since this pattern was always free, it has not been officially tested in the community, so all feedback regarding errors or inconsistencies is highly encouraged! Do not hesitate to leave a review at the bottom of the page, and I will review it and correct it where necessary.

I used a 5.00 mm hook, but you can increase or decrease the size if you'd like a tighter/looser look. Note that you will need to add or subtract rows from the pattern to get the correct sizing. I love to get the sets on Amazon; they usually come with stitch markers, which are absolutely essential to amigurumi. It also includes a whole range of crochet hook sizes, all in a cute matching case. You can find this adorable China-style set of crochet hooks here.

For this pattern I used approximately 150 yards of Big Twist Value yarn in white, 5-10 yards of Big Twist Value yarn in grape, 5-10 yards in Big Twist Value yarn in black.

Yarn

You can substitute the yarn for another brand or weight; just use an appropriately sized hook to get the proper size for your finished project. You may need to add or subtract rows from the crown and the body of the hat to achieve this.

Materials

  • 5.00 mm hook
  • ~200 yards of yarn
  • tapestry needle
  • scissors
  • measuring tape (optional for correct sizing)

To make the process easier, use a measuring tape to measure your work as you go to ensure the sizing will be correct.. The crown of the hat is the most important part to get a nice fit.

Abbreviations

  • Mc = magic circle
  • Inc = 2 single crochets in the same stitch
  • St(s) = stitch(es)
  • Sc = single crochet
  • Hdc = half-double crochet
  • Ch = chain
  • Slst = slipstitch
  • #sc = # single crochet in the same stitch
  • Sc # = single crochet in the next # stitch(es)
  • #hdc = # half-double crochet in the same stitch
  • Hdc # = half-double crochet in the next # stitch(es)
  • [#] = number of stitches at the end of the round
  • (...) x # = repeat the sequence in the parentheses # times

This pattern is considered beginner-friendly however, you should be able to do basic stitches such as single crochet, half-double crochet, and increases.

Notes

  • Do not slip stitch at the beginning of the round unless indicated.
  • All colors can be swapped out for your preferred colors. Please note that I used weight 4 yarn, so using another weight can vary the size.
  • Make sure you measure the crown and the body of the hat as you work to ensure proper fit.
  • When stitching the mouth, I like to stitch over the white yarn of the color when I am stitching in black.
  • The mouth typically takes up ~1.5 inches of the bottom portion of the body of the hat.
  • I only join the rounds in the last 3 rounds of the brim (in organge, purple, and black)
  • Interspace = the amount of stitches between the two eyes.
